Catering Services

Buying a catering business?

We arrange the finance. You get the keys.

A catering business with a stable base of contracted clients, a reliable chef and operations team, and strong forward bookings is a genuinely fundable acquisition. Contract catering income — where corporate clients, schools, healthcare facilities, or events venues commit to ongoing catering agreements — creates predictable, recurring revenue that specialist lenders can assess with confidence. A well-run catering business with diversified contracts and a strong events pipeline is a more fundable proposition than many buyers expect.

What lenders look at

Contract income and forward bookings are the foundation. Lenders will examine the balance between contracted catering income — corporate hospitality, staff canteens, school meals, or healthcare catering — and event-based or ad hoc work. Contracted catering income is assessed most favourably because it generates regular, predictable revenue regardless of seasonal variation. Event catering income is higher margin but less predictable — lenders will want to see a strong forward events booking pipeline at the time of acquisition as evidence of near-term revenue continuity.

Client concentration and contract terms are assessed carefully. A catering business generating income across a diversified client base — corporate, education, healthcare, and events — with no single client representing more than twenty percent of total contracted revenue is a significantly stronger proposition than one dependent on a small number of large accounts. Contract terms are reviewed in detail — notice periods, minimum volume commitments, and price review mechanisms all affect the income security that lenders are advancing against.

Food safety compliance and Environmental Health history are reviewed as part of due diligence. Catering businesses are subject to regular Environmental Health inspections — the most recent Food Hygiene Rating and any improvement notices or enforcement actions will be assessed by lenders. A business with a consistently high Food Hygiene Rating — four or five stars — and a clean Environmental Health history is a more confident lending proposition than one with unresolved compliance issues. Any improvement notices need to be addressed and closed before a funding offer is issued.

Chef and operations team retention are critical. Catering businesses are operationally dependent on their head chefs, sous chefs, and operations managers — experienced catering professionals are difficult to recruit and their departure directly affects both food quality and client retention. Lenders will want to understand the team's stability, their qualifications — Level 2 or Level 3 Food Safety, relevant chef qualifications — and whether key staff are contracted to stay through the transition. A buyer who has secured commitments from the head chef and operations manager is in a materially stronger position.

How we help

We are acquisition finance and loans brokers, not lenders. We package your application, present it to the funders with genuine commercial services appetite, and manage the process from first conversation through to completion.

We also arrange government-backed facilities for catering business acquisitions — helping buyers access up to £2 million toward their purchase where the criteria are met.

Every catering acquisition is different. Tell us about the business. We will take it from there.

Lenders want to see a professionally prepared funding application. They want to know that the business is viable, that the proposed borrowing is affordable and that their loan can be repaid as agreed.

We use our proven iLendi Six™ method to build a strong funding application around the things lenders need to understand about your purchase.

05 — The funding

How much can you borrow?

Every purchase is different. The amount you can borrow will depend on the catering services, its trading performance, the purchase price, your circumstances and the transaction structure.

For this type of purchase, lenders will focus particularly on forward bookings, contract income, food margins and staffing. We prepare those details clearly and approach funders that understand the sector.

We arrange funding across the UK and work with you to find the financing solution that best fits the purchase.

Common questions

Buying a catering business — your questions answered

How much deposit do I need to buy a catering business?+

Most catering business acquisitions are funded with a deposit of around 20% to 30% of the purchase price, though this varies with the strength of the trading figures, whether the deal includes freehold property, and your own experience. Where there is property security or a particularly strong trading history, lenders can sometimes go further.

Can I borrow against goodwill when buying a catering business?+

Yes. Specialist acquisition lenders will lend against goodwill where the trading history supports it, which is essential for leasehold deals with no bricks-and-mortar security. The application has to be presented so the underwriter can see the sustainable, transferable earnings behind that goodwill.

How long does it take to arrange finance to buy a catering business?+

Indicative terms are usually available within 48 hours of your enquiry. A full offer typically follows within two to four weeks, with completion driven mainly by valuation and the pace of the legal work on both sides.

Is iLendi Capital a lender or broker?+

iLendi Capital is an acquisition finance and loans broker, not a direct lender. We work with buyers across the UK to prepare their funding applications, introduce them to the lenders most likely to approve them, and manage the deal through to completion. We also specialise in government-backed facilities, helping you secure up to £2m toward your purchase.
