Electrical Services

Buying an electrical services business?

We arrange the finance. You get the keys.

An electrical services business with a stable base of commercial contracts, NICEIC or NAPIT accredited electricians, and a loyal customer base across domestic, commercial, and industrial sectors is a genuinely fundable acquisition. Planned maintenance contracts — where commercial clients commit to periodic inspection, testing, and remedial works on a recurring basis — create predictable, contracted income that specialist lenders can assess with confidence. A well-run electrical business with strong contract renewal rates, recognised accreditations, and a skilled, fully qualified team is a more fundable proposition than many buyers expect.

What lenders look at

Contract income and pipeline are the foundation. Lenders will examine the balance between planned maintenance contracts — periodic inspection and testing, fixed wire testing, emergency lighting maintenance, and PAT testing programmes — and project-based installation work. Planned maintenance contracts generate regular, scheduled income with high renewal rates. Installation projects generate stronger margins but need a constant pipeline of new work to sustain revenue. A business with a strong planned maintenance base supplemented by a busy installation operation is the most fundable profile — the contracted income provides the serviceability base and the project pipeline demonstrates growth potential.

NICEIC or NAPIT accreditation is central to the underwriting. Accreditation with a recognised electrical competent person scheme — the National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting or the National Association of Professional Inspectors and Testers — is a condition of most commercial electrical contracts and is needed for self-certification of electrical work under Part P of the Building Regulations. Lenders will check accreditation status as a primary due diligence step. The maintenance of NICEIC or NAPIT accreditation through the ownership change must be confirmed before any funding offer is issued — loss of accreditation would directly affect the business's ability to service its existing contract base.

Electrician retention and qualification levels are reviewed carefully. Electrical businesses are operationally dependent on their qualified electricians — 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations qualified electricians with relevant inspection and testing certifications are in high demand and difficult to replace. Lenders will want to understand the team's stability, their qualification levels, their NICEIC or NAPIT registration status, and whether key electricians are contracted to stay through the transition. A business with a stable, well-qualified team across both domestic and commercial work is a more resilient proposition than one dependent on a small number of key individuals.

Vehicles and equipment are assessed as asset finance components alongside the acquisition loan. An electrical business typically operates a fleet of liveried vans equipped with tools, testing equipment, and parts stock — all of which hold asset value that can be financed separately from the goodwill. Lenders will examine the age, condition, and ownership status of vehicles and specialist equipment. A well-maintained fleet with clear title and current MOTs is a stronger asset finance proposition than an ageing fleet with deferred maintenance.

Common questions

Buying an electrical services business — your questions answered

How much deposit do I need to buy an electrical services business?+

Most electrical services business acquisitions are funded with a deposit of around 20% to 30% of the purchase price, though this varies with the strength of the trading figures, whether the deal includes freehold property, and your own experience. Where there is property security or a particularly strong trading history, lenders can sometimes go further.

Can I borrow against goodwill when buying an electrical services business?+

Yes. Specialist acquisition lenders will lend against goodwill where the trading history supports it, which is essential for leasehold deals with no bricks-and-mortar security. The application has to be presented so the underwriter can see the sustainable, transferable earnings behind that goodwill.

How long does it take to arrange finance to buy an electrical services business?+

Indicative terms are usually available within 48 hours of your enquiry. A full offer typically follows within two to four weeks, with completion driven mainly by valuation and the pace of the legal work on both sides.

Is iLendi Capital a lender or broker?+

iLendi Capital is an acquisition finance and loans broker, not a direct lender. We work with buyers across the UK to prepare their funding applications, introduce them to the lenders most likely to approve them, and manage the deal through to completion. We also specialise in government-backed facilities, helping you secure up to £2m toward your purchase.
