Animal Care & Grooming
Buying an animal care or grooming business?
We arrange the finance. You get the keys.
An animal grooming salon or dog daycare business with a loyal client base, consistent weekly bookings, and a skilled groomer team is a genuinely fundable acquisition. The pet care sector has grown significantly alongside rising pet ownership — dog grooming in particular has moved from an occasional luxury to a regular, recurring service that owners book on a four to eight week cycle. A well-run grooming or daycare business with strong repeat booking rates, good online reviews, and a clean licensing history is a more fundable proposition than many buyers expect.
What lenders look at
Weekly bookings and recurring client income are the foundation. Lenders will examine the weekly turnover — verified from booking system data, bank statements, and VAT returns — and the proportion of income generated by regular repeat clients on recurring booking cycles. A grooming salon where the majority of clients book their next appointment before leaving — returning every four to eight weeks — generates the predictable, recurring income that lenders advance against with confidence. Dog daycare businesses generate daily recurring income from regular clients whose dogs attend on fixed weekly schedules — that contracted daily income is assessed very favourably. Booking system data from dedicated pet business platforms provides independently verifiable appointment and revenue evidence that strengthens the application.
Licensing and animal welfare compliance are central to the underwriting. Dog daycare businesses in England are licensed under the Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) Regulations 2018 — the licence is issued by the local authority and the most recent inspection star rating reflects the welfare standards maintained by the business. Grooming salons are not currently licensed under the same regulations but are subject to general animal welfare obligations under the Animal Welfare Act 2006. Lenders will check that all applicable licences are current and that there are no outstanding welfare concerns, enforcement notices, or complaints. A business with a clean compliance history and a high star rating — where applicable — is a more confident lending proposition.
Groomer retention and qualifications are reviewed carefully. Animal grooming businesses are operationally dependent on their groomers — clients book with specific groomers whose technique and style their pets respond well to. The departure of a popular groomer can trigger immediate client attrition. Lenders will want to understand the groomer team's stability, their qualifications — City and Guilds Level 2 or 3 in dog grooming, or iPET Network equivalent — and whether key groomers are contracted to stay through the ownership transition. A business where client relationships are distributed across the whole groomer team rather than concentrated on a single individual is a more fundable and resilient acquisition.
Premises and equipment are assessed alongside the trading performance. A grooming salon or daycare facility carries specialist equipment — grooming tables, bathing stations, drying equipment, kennelling, and outdoor exercise areas. Lenders will examine the age, condition, and ownership status of key equipment. The premises are assessed on their suitability for continued animal care use — adequate space, ventilation, heating, exercise provision, and planning consent for the animal care use are all reviewed. A well-fitted, purpose-equipped premises on a secure lease or freehold in an accessible location is a strong proposition.

Common questions
Buying an animal care or grooming business — your questions answered
How much deposit do I need to buy an animal care or grooming business?+
Most animal care or grooming business acquisitions are funded with a deposit of around 20% to 30% of the purchase price, though this varies with the strength of the trading figures, whether the deal includes freehold property, and your own experience. Where there is property security or a particularly strong trading history, lenders can sometimes go further.
Can I borrow against goodwill when buying an animal care or grooming business?+
Yes. Specialist acquisition lenders will lend against goodwill where the trading history supports it, which is essential for leasehold deals with no bricks-and-mortar security. The application has to be presented so the underwriter can see the sustainable, transferable earnings behind that goodwill.
How long does it take to arrange finance to buy an animal care or grooming business?+
Indicative terms are usually available within 48 hours of your enquiry. A full offer typically follows within two to four weeks, with completion driven mainly by valuation and the pace of the legal work on both sides.
Is iLendi Capital a lender or broker?+
iLendi Capital is an acquisition finance and loans broker, not a direct lender. We work with buyers across the UK to prepare their funding applications, introduce them to the lenders most likely to approve them, and manage the deal through to completion. We also specialise in government-backed facilities, helping you secure up to £2m toward your purchase.
