Courier & Delivery

Buying a courier or delivery business?

We arrange the finance. You get the keys.

Courier and last-mile delivery businesses combine contracted volume with a fleet that holds tangible asset value — and the funding usually reflects both. An acquisition loan against the trading business and asset finance against the vehicles are typically arranged as one integrated package. A well-run courier business with strong contracted client volume, a reliable driver network, and a maintained fleet is a more fundable proposition than many buyers expect — provided the application is structured correctly from the outset.

What lenders look at

Contract quality and client concentration are the foundation of any courier business valuation. Lenders will examine the mix between contracted volume clients — businesses committed to a minimum weekly or monthly despatch volume — and spot or ad hoc delivery income. Contracted volume provides the income predictability that lenders advance against with confidence. A business generating seventy percent or more of its income from contracted clients on rolling agreements is a significantly stronger proposition than one dependent on variable spot work. Client concentration is assessed carefully — a single client representing more than twenty percent of total revenue carries a risk that lenders price accordingly.

The fleet is assessed separately from the trading business. Vehicles hold real, financeable asset value — and asset finance against the fleet is typically arranged alongside the acquisition loan as part of the overall funding package. Lenders will examine the age, condition, mileage, and ownership status of each vehicle. A well-maintained, relatively modern fleet with clear title and up to date servicing records is a stronger asset finance proposition than an ageing fleet with deferred maintenance. Where vehicles are already subject to existing finance agreements, those obligations form part of the overall deal structure.

Driver status and operational structure are reviewed carefully. Courier businesses operate with a mix of employed drivers and self-employed owner-drivers — the balance between the two affects both the cost structure and the HMRC compliance position. Lenders will want to understand the driver model, the IR35 position where relevant, and whether the operational structure is sustainable and compliant. A business with a clear, documented driver engagement model and a clean HMRC history is a more confident lending proposition.

Operating licences and regulatory compliance are assessed as part of due diligence. Courier businesses operating vehicles over 3.5 tonnes need an Operator Licence — the licence is tied to the operator and does not transfer automatically with the business. Lenders will want confirmation of the incoming owner's licence position and the timeline for transfer before issuing a funding offer. Sub-3.5 tonne fleets are not subject to Operator Licence requirements but are assessed on vehicle roadworthiness and insurance compliance.

How we help

We are acquisition finance and loans brokers, not lenders. We package your application, present it to the funders with genuine transport sector appetite, and manage the process from first conversation through to completion.

We also arrange government-backed facilities for courier and delivery business acquisitions — helping buyers access up to £2 million toward their purchase where the criteria are met.

Every courier acquisition is different. Tell us about the business. We will take it from there.

02 — The opportunity

What can we help you buy?

We arrange acquisition finance and loans for courier and delivery businesses across the UK — from single-depot route operations to multi-vehicle logistics businesses.

Last-mile parcel operations

Depot-based businesses delivering for a major carrier under a defined territory agreement. The asking prices for leasehold and freehold courier and delivery businesses typically range from £75,000 to £2m.

Same-day courier businesses

Urgent, higher-margin work built on direct client relationships rather than a single principal.

Specialist medical and legal couriers

Contracted work with hospitals, laboratories and law firms, where reliability commands premium rates.

Temperature-controlled delivery

Chilled and frozen distribution with specialist vehicles and contracted food or pharmaceutical clients.

Multi-drop contract businesses

Fixed-route contracts with retailers and wholesalers offering predictable weekly volumes.

Fleet-heavy acquisitions

Where the fleet carries most of the value, refinancing the vehicles reduces the cash required at completion.

03 — The transaction

What can we finance?

The Business Purchase

Funding to buy a trading business, including goodwill and the business assets.

The Freehold

Funding for the purchase of the premises from which the business operates.

The Leasehold

Funding to buy a business operating from leased premises.

Fixtures, Fittings and Equipment

Where appropriate, funding can also take account of the assets required to operate the business.

Working Capital

Depending on the transaction, we can arrange funding for the initial working capital required after you take ownership.

Every deal is assessed on its own merits — not every element of every purchase will be financeable, and we'll tell you plainly what is and what isn't.

04 — The lender's view

What will lenders look at?

Lenders want to see a professionally prepared funding application. They want to know that the business is viable, that the proposed borrowing is affordable and that their loan can be repaid as agreed.

We use our proven iLendi Six™ method to build a strong funding application around the things lenders need to understand about your purchase.

05 — The funding

How much can you borrow?

Every purchase is different. The amount you can borrow will depend on the business, its trading performance, the purchase price, your circumstances and the structure of the transaction.

For courier and delivery businesses, lenders will focus on the contract with the principal carrier or clients and its remaining term, volume history, fleet age and existing finance, driver arrangements, and fuel and maintenance costs against margin.

We arrange funding across the UK and work with you to find the financing solution that best fits the purchase.

Common questions

Buying a courier or delivery business — your questions answered

How much deposit do I need to buy a courier or delivery business?+

Most courier or delivery business acquisitions are funded with a deposit of around 20% to 30% of the purchase price, though this varies with the strength of the trading figures, whether the deal includes freehold property, and your own experience. Where there is property security or a particularly strong trading history, lenders can sometimes go further.

Can I borrow against goodwill when buying a courier or delivery business?+

Yes. Specialist acquisition lenders will lend against goodwill where the trading history supports it, which is essential for leasehold deals with no bricks-and-mortar security. The application has to be presented so the underwriter can see the sustainable, transferable earnings behind that goodwill.

How long does it take to arrange finance to buy a courier or delivery business?+

Indicative terms are usually available within 48 hours of your enquiry. A full offer typically follows within two to four weeks, with completion driven mainly by valuation and the pace of the legal work on both sides.

Is iLendi Capital a lender or broker?+

iLendi Capital is an acquisition finance and loans broker, not a direct lender. We work with buyers across the UK to prepare their funding applications, introduce them to the lenders most likely to approve them, and manage the deal through to completion. We also specialise in government-backed facilities, helping you secure up to £2m toward your purchase.
